The Importance Of Children’s Eye Examination:
Making Vision A Priority
As parents, we want the best for our children. Ensuring your child has a regular eye examination is a crucial part of their overall health and development. Let’s dive into why these check-ups are so important and how they can benefit your little ones.

Catching Problems Early:
Children’s eyes grow and change rapidly. Regular eye exams are essential for helping identify conditions like myopia (shortsightedness), hyperopia (longsightedness) astigmatism, and amblyopia (lazy eye) at an early stage. Exams assess binocular vision ensuring both eyes work together properly, which is crucial for a child’s visual development. When detected early enough these conditions can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, or appropriate referral, preventing them from becoming more severe.

Boosting Academic Success
Did you know that 80% of learning is visual? Children rely on their vision for reading, writing, and understanding the world around them. Undiagnosed vision problems can lead to difficulties in school, affecting their grades and confidence.

Enhancing Coordination and Safety
Good vision is essential for physical activities too. Whether it’s catching a ball, riding a bike, or navigating the playground, clear vision helps children develop better hand-eye coordination and stay safe. Regular eye exams ensure they can enjoy their favourite activities without unnecessary obstacles.

Colour Vision
Children typically develop full colour vision by age 3. Early detection of any colour vision deficiencies is important for their learning and play, as it can help ensure they have the support needed to thrive in both educational and social environments.

Children and Myopia
What is Myopia?
Myopia is also known as being short-sighted or near-sighted. If you are short-sighted, you have problems seeing things in the distance clearly. Myopia is often due to the eye being slightly too long. The rate of myopia progresses more rapidly in children, with evidence showing that children are becoming more myopic at any earlier age. The condition usually starts in childhood (as young as 3 years old) and tends to get worse until the eye has stopped growing (between 16-21 years old).
This means myopia can keep progressing up until your early twenties, causing your prescription to increase and your vision become worse. Evidence is mounting that myopia is growing around the world, with a recent study estimating that on average, 30% of the world is currently myopic and by 2050 it is predicted that almost 50% of the population will be myopic.
- What is Myopia control:
- Myopia control is the methods used to slow the progression of myopia.
- Different methods can be used for Myopia Control, these include corrective spectacles or contact lenses.
- Myopia control works by slowing the increase in the eye’s axial length, which helps reduce the progression of short sightedness.
- Importance of myopia control
- Reduces the risk of serious eye conditions like retinal detachment, glaucoma and cataracts.
- Preserves long- term eye health and vision quality.
- Starting myopia control as soon as possible is essential.
