Our service is committed to offering an outstanding level of care in a relaxed and welcoming environment. We use advanced equipment in the eyecare industry complemented by our professional expertise.

We offer a range of contact lenses to suit your needs. If you’ve never worn contact lenses and feel a little nervous about them, or have been advised to stop wearing them, come and see us and let the optician show you how they work and what it could mean for you.  You can wear them for sports, holidays, socially or if you would rather wear contact lenses more than your spectacle glasses- that’s ok we can help and guide you with this.  We can bespoke your contact lens appointment to your individual needs to ensure we have given all options a chance.

It is underestimated how dry eyes can affect the quality and comfort of your vision. There are two types of dry eyes: aqueous deficiency (most common) and evaporative. You can have both. With the right diagnosis, we can guide you on the right treatment plan.

Causes of dry eyes include:

Screens can reduce the natural blink reflex, causing us to blink less frequently than normal. This decreased blinking can lead to dry eyes because blinking helps spread tears evenly across the surface of the eye to keep it moist and lubricated.

Blepharitis, which is an inflammation of the eyelids, causing them to become red, swollen and itchy. It often results in flaky dandruff – like scales on the eyelashes. Common symptoms include, burning or stinging eyes, sensitivity to light and crusting on the margins of the eyelids. Proper eyelid hygiene and warm compresses are essential for managing blepharitis.  It is advised to treat even mild cases of blepharitis to prevent symptoms from worsening and reduce the risk of complications and maintain overall eye health.

Air conditioning, central heating, aging, hormonal changes, and certain medications and health conditions can also add to dry eyes.

Advanced Spectralis 4D scanners are the instrument of choice for retinal specialists within the NHS. Unlike other 3D scanners and retinal photographic equipment, the SPECTRALIS adds a 4th dimension allowing us to monitor change over time to 1/1000 of a millimetre in exactly the same place at every visit.

The term glaucoma refers to eye conditions associated with damage to a specific type  of neuron in the eye. These are the cells that carry vision signals from the eye to the brain.  One of the key risk factors for glaucoma is high pressure in the eye. The disease progresses very slowly over time. Due to the slow progression of the disease, vision loss often goes unnoticed during the early stages. There are a number of very effective treatments for glaucoma, and early diagnosis and treatment is necessary to preserve vision.  One of the best tools eye care professionals have to identify glaucoma is an OCT exam.

Myopia is also known as being short-sighted or near-sighted. If you are short-sighted, you have problems seeing things in the distance clearly. Myopia is often due to the eye being slightly too long.

The rate of myopia progresses more rapidly in children, with evidence showing that children are becoming more myopic at an earlier age. The condition usually starts in childhood (as young as 3 years old) and tends to get worse until the eye has stopped growing (between 16-21 years old).

Myopia control treatments are crucial because they can slow down the progression of childhood myopia.

At Philip Edwards Opticians we offer spectacle and contact lens correction for myopia. There is no age limit to start myopia control but younger children will benefit from myopia control the most.

Children’s eye tests are important because they help find vision problems early. Early detection ensures children can see clearly, which is essential for their learning and development. Regular eye examinations can prevent future issues and support a child’s overall health and success.

At Philip Edwards, we adapt our examinations to make sure children feel comfortable and enjoy the experience, ensuring that they look forward to their next appointment.

We also offer a wide selection of great frames designed especially for children.
